The Lazy Brain vs The Warrior Brain
About this episode
SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Warriors Haven Podcast, the place where discipline meets purpose and everyday people become unstoppable.
SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Jaisha Sutherland, a retired Army drill sergeant, single mom, and the founder of the Warriors Haven.
SPEAKER_00: Around here, we talk fitness, mindset, and the mission of building a stronger you, mentally, physically, and financially.
SPEAKER_00: Because this isn't just about the gym.
SPEAKER_00: It's about life, leadership, and living on your terms.
SPEAKER_00: So gear up, lock in, and let's step into the haven where warriors are made.
SPEAKER_00: All right, imagine this.
SPEAKER_00: We're sitting across from each other at a dinner table.
SPEAKER_00: No phones, no distractions, just real conversation.
SPEAKER_00: And I ask you something simple.
SPEAKER_00: Why do you keep doing the things you said you were done doing?
SPEAKER_00: I'll give you a few seconds to think about that.
SPEAKER_00: Well, not because you're lazy.
SPEAKER_00: It's not because you don't care, but because you have two brains fighting for control every single day.
SPEAKER_00: You ready to get into this with me?
SPEAKER_00: This episode, we're going with the lazy brain versus the warrior brain.
SPEAKER_00: And I'm really excited.
SPEAKER_00: So let me break this down in the simplest, realest way I can.
SPEAKER_00: Inside your head, you've got the lazy brain.
SPEAKER_00: This is your survival brain.
SPEAKER_00: Scientists, the real professionals, not me, I'm just your favorite drill sergeant, but scientists call it your limbric system.
SPEAKER_00: It's ancient, it's fast, it's emotional.
SPEAKER_00: Its job is to keep you safe, keep you comfortable, keep you alive.
SPEAKER_00: It does not care about your goals, it does not care about your dreams.
SPEAKER_00: It cares about one thing, and that is how do we avoid discomfort right now?
SPEAKER_00: Then we have what I'm calling the warrior brain.
SPEAKER_00: This is your prefrontal cortex.
SPEAKER_00: This is the part of your brain responsible for decision making, discipline, long-term thinking, self-control.
SPEAKER_00: This is the version of you that says, we're getting up anyway, we're doing the workout, we're building the life we said we wanted.
SPEAKER_00: Here's the problem.
SPEAKER_00: According to research published by the American Psychological Association, over forty to fifty percent of our daily actions are habits, not conscious decisions.
SPEAKER_00: Which means if your lazy brain or the limbic system is running the show, you're living on autopilot.
SPEAKER_00: So let's talk real for a second because I know what this feels like.
SPEAKER_00: You say, I'm starting Monday, I just need more motivation.
SPEAKER_00: I'll do it when I feel ready.
SPEAKER_00: And then Monday comes and your brain goes, You're tired.
SPEAKER_00: Just one more hour.
SPEAKER_00: You know, you deserve a break.
SPEAKER_00: That's not weakness, that's biology.
SPEAKER_00: Scientists at Harvard Medical School explain that your brain is wired to conserve energy.
SPEAKER_00: It literally tries to use the least amount of effort possible to protect resources.
SPEAKER_00: So when you choose discipline, you are going against your natural wiring.
SPEAKER_00: That's why it feels hard.
SPEAKER_00: So, how do you build a warrior brain?
SPEAKER_00: Well, not with motivation and not with hype, but with systems that override your lazy brain.
SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna give you five simple science-backed tools you can actually use.
SPEAKER_00: The first one is the five-second rule, and it helps interrupt the lazy brain.
SPEAKER_00: This comes from Mel Robbins, who's absolutely one of my favorites, and it's also backed by neuroscience.
SPEAKER_00: When you hesitate, your brain starts talking you out of action with within seconds.
SPEAKER_00: So instead, you count backwards.
SPEAKER_00: Five, four, three, two, one, go.
SPEAKER_00: Why does this work?
SPEAKER_00: Because you're interrupting the limbic system and activating the prefrontal cortex.
SPEAKER_00: Research on cognitive control shows that interrupting thought loops reduces avoidance behavior.
SPEAKER_00: That's coming from the National Institutes of Health.
SPEAKER_00: This is how you stop overthinking instantly.
SPEAKER_00: And it's honestly one of the ones I do regularly.
SPEAKER_00: The second tip: shrink the goal.
SPEAKER_00: Your brain hates big tasks.
SPEAKER_00: Your lazy brain sees big goals as threats.
SPEAKER_00: So instead of I'm gonna go work out for an hour, you say I'm putting my shoes on.
SPEAKER_00: That's it.
SPEAKER_00: Research from Stanford University, behavior scientist BJ Fogg shows that tiny habits dramatically increase follow-through because they reduce resistance.
SPEAKER_00: You don't need motivation, you need lower friction.
SPEAKER_00: The third, stack your habits.
SPEAKER_00: I also call it anchoring.
SPEAKER_00: Let the brain work for you.
SPEAKER_00: Your brain loves patterns, so instead of creating a new habit, attach it to something you already do.
SPEAKER_00: Anchor it.
SPEAKER_00: After I brush my teeth, I'm gonna do 10 wall push-ups.
SPEAKER_00: After I make coffee, I'm going to knock out 25 squats right there in the kitchen.
SPEAKER_00: After I get home, I change into my workout clothes.
SPEAKER_00: According to research from Duke University, stack habits, or as I call it, anchoring works because it leverages existing neural pathways, making behavior more automatic.
SPEAKER_00: You're not forcing discipline, you're building it into your identity.
SPEAKER_00: The next one, make it easy to win.
SPEAKER_00: Dopamine drives everything.
SPEAKER_00: We've talked about it, so let's talk about it again.
SPEAKER_00: And that's dopamine.
SPEAKER_00: Dopamine isn't just about pleasure, it's about anticipation and reward.
SPEAKER_00: Research published in natural neuroscience shows that dopamine spikes when we expect a reward, not just when we receive it.
SPEAKER_00: So what do you do?
SPEAKER_00: Well, celebrate small wins, track the progress, check the boxes, even something as simple as I showed up today.
SPEAKER_00: That creates a dopamine loop.
SPEAKER_00: And your brain goes, Oh, let's do that again.
SPEAKER_00: And last, decide who you are.
SPEAKER_00: Identity overrides emotion.
SPEAKER_00: This is the one most people skip.
SPEAKER_00: Your brain follows identity, not goals.
SPEAKER_00: So instead of saying I'm trying to work out, you say, I'm someone who trains.
SPEAKER_00: Instead of I want discipline, you say I'm a disciplined person.
SPEAKER_00: Research from University College London shows that identity-based habits are more likely to stick long-term than outcome-based goals.
SPEAKER_00: Because now you're not negotiating, you're just acting in alignment with who you are.
SPEAKER_00: So let me ask you something.
SPEAKER_00: At this table, right now, which brain has been running your life?
SPEAKER_00: The one that protects comfort or the one that builds your future?
SPEAKER_00: Because here's the truth: nobody says out loud.
SPEAKER_00: Your lazy brain will always be there, it's not going away, and it never fixes itself.
SPEAKER_00: But your warrior brain that gets stronger every time you choose discipline.
SPEAKER_00: So a final thought, and I need you to hear this.
SPEAKER_00: You don't need more motivation, you need to understand your brain.
SPEAKER_00: Because when you understand the game, you stop blaming yourself and you start building systems that make winning inevitable.
SPEAKER_00: So your move today, don't try to do all five.
SPEAKER_00: Pick one, just one.
SPEAKER_00: Either use the five-second rule or shrink the goal, stack or anchor a habit, track a win, choose your identity, and start there.
SPEAKER_00: Because discipline, it's not something you're born with, it's something you train.
SPEAKER_00: And if this episode hit you, if you felt seen in this, share it with someone who's been stuck in the same loop.
