The Real Reason People Stay Broke
About this episode
SPEAKER_00: Hi friend, since I have your attention, let me say something.
SPEAKER_00: Motivation is the reason you keep starting over.
SPEAKER_00: Not your life, not your schedule, not your responsibilities, motivation.
SPEAKER_00: Because you've been taught to wait until you feel ready.
SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly why you're stuck.
SPEAKER_00: Hang with me for the next few minutes.
SPEAKER_00: Let's dive into the episode.
SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Warriors Haven Podcast, the place where discipline meets purpose and everyday people become unstoppable.
SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Jaisha Sutherland, a retired Army drill sergeant, single mom, and the founder of the Warriors Haven.
SPEAKER_00: Around here, we talk fitness, mindset, and the mission of building a stronger you, mentally, physically, and financially.
SPEAKER_00: Because this isn't just about the gym.
SPEAKER_00: It's about life, leadership, and living on your terms.
SPEAKER_00: So gear up, lock in, and let's step into the Haven where warriors are made.
SPEAKER_00: This series we're going with Built by Discipline.
SPEAKER_00: This is a show where we're not going to wait for motivation.
SPEAKER_00: Here, we build systems that change our lives.
SPEAKER_00: I'm Jay, and today we're going to break a belief that has been quietly keeping you stuck for years.
SPEAKER_00: All right.
SPEAKER_00: How many times have we all said, this is my week?
SPEAKER_00: I'm starting Monday.
SPEAKER_00: You feel excited, you feel ready, you're motivated, you plan it all out.
SPEAKER_00: And then life hits.
SPEAKER_00: You're tired.
SPEAKER_00: Something comes up.
SPEAKER_00: Your mood shifts.
SPEAKER_00: And just like that, you stop.
SPEAKER_00: And then what do you tell yourself?
SPEAKER_00: I just need to get motivated again.
SPEAKER_00: And the cycle repeats over and over.
SPEAKER_00: And you start to believe something is wrong with you.
SPEAKER_00: But let me be clear, friends, there's nothing wrong with you.
SPEAKER_00: You've just been depending on the wrong thing.
SPEAKER_00: And this isn't just a mindset issue.
SPEAKER_00: This is backed by real research.
SPEAKER_00: See, I was reading a couple stories and data, and the American Psychological Association explains that stress and emotional states directly impact decision making and consistency, meaning when your mood drops, your actions drop.
SPEAKER_00: And one of my favorite organizations, the World Health Organization, or as we also know who, they reported that ongoing stress and mental fatigue are increasing globally, which makes it even harder for people to stay consistent with healthy habits.
SPEAKER_00: So let me simplify that.
SPEAKER_00: If your life is built on feelings, your results will always be inconsistent.
SPEAKER_00: You can hit the playback button and listen to what I just said again.
SPEAKER_00: Motivation is emotional.
SPEAKER_00: So when motivation feels powerful in the moment, it gives you that spark, that excitement, that this is it feeling.
SPEAKER_00: But here's the truth: motivation is temporary.
SPEAKER_00: It comes and it goes.
SPEAKER_00: And the American Psychological Association highlights that emotions naturally fluctuate throughout the day based on stress, environment, and mental load.
SPEAKER_00: Meaning you are not meant to feel motivated all the time.
SPEAKER_00: So if your plan is I'll do it when I feel like it, you've already lost, friend.
SPEAKER_00: Because the moment you don't feel like it, you stop.
SPEAKER_00: Like I said, motivation is a feeling, an emotion.
SPEAKER_00: Feelings, those emotions are unstable.
SPEAKER_00: If you depend on motivation, you'll stay inconsistent.
SPEAKER_00: You don't need more motivation.
SPEAKER_00: You need a better system.
SPEAKER_00: So here's one of my favorite words.
SPEAKER_00: Discipline.
SPEAKER_00: Discipline removes the decision.
SPEAKER_00: Now, here's where everything shifts.
SPEAKER_00: Discipline removes the question.
SPEAKER_00: You don't ask, do I feel like working out?
SPEAKER_00: You just go.
SPEAKER_00: You don't ask, should I eat better today?
SPEAKER_00: You already decided that.
SPEAKER_00: And here's why this matters.
SPEAKER_00: The American Psychological Association explains that the more decisions you have to make under stress, the more likely you are to avoid any action.
SPEAKER_00: That's why you procrastinate.
SPEAKER_00: That's why you stall.
SPEAKER_00: That's why you feel stuck.
SPEAKER_00: Not because you're lazy, because your brain is overloaded.
SPEAKER_00: Discipline, it fixes that.
SPEAKER_00: Because it removes the decision completely.
SPEAKER_00: This is what I had to rebuild after leaving the army.
SPEAKER_00: My structure.
SPEAKER_00: Because in the military, you don't decide every day what you're doing, it's already decided for you.
SPEAKER_00: And that's why you execute.
SPEAKER_00: When I lost that structure, I had to build it myself.
SPEAKER_00: And that's when everything changed.
SPEAKER_00: Discipline removes the excuses.
SPEAKER_00: Less decisions equals more action.
SPEAKER_00: Structure creates freedom.
SPEAKER_00: Friends, if you want to change your life, you have to stop focusing on motivation and start building systems.
SPEAKER_00: Because systems don't care how you feel.
SPEAKER_00: They work whether you're tired or not.
SPEAKER_00: They work whether you're stressed or not.
SPEAKER_00: They work whether you're motivated or not.
SPEAKER_00: And here's what we know.
SPEAKER_00: The World Health Organization continues to emphasize that consistent habits like movement, routine, and structure are key to improving overall health and energy.
SPEAKER_00: Simple version.
SPEAKER_00: Consistency beats intensity every single time.
SPEAKER_00: And consistency only comes from systems.
SPEAKER_00: Let me give you an example.
SPEAKER_00: Simple system.
SPEAKER_00: Could probably look like this.
SPEAKER_00: Waking up at the same time.
SPEAKER_00: Having a set workout time.
SPEAKER_00: Planning your meals.
SPEAKER_00: Limiting distractions.
SPEAKER_00: That's not complicated, but it is powerful.
SPEAKER_00: You don't rise to your goals.
SPEAKER_00: You fall to your systems.
SPEAKER_00: Systems create results, not feelings.
SPEAKER_00: If it's not scheduled, it's not real.
SPEAKER_00: So many of my friends, on a regular, I feel like we talk about finances.
SPEAKER_00: And I have to say that your finances follow your discipline.
SPEAKER_00: Let me take it one step further.
SPEAKER_00: Because this doesn't just affect your workouts or your routine, it also affects your money too.
SPEAKER_00: Your finances follow the same exact pattern.
SPEAKER_00: If you rely on motivation, you'll spend when you feel like it.
SPEAKER_00: Avoid when it feels uncomfortable.
SPEAKER_00: Delay when it requires discipline.
SPEAKER_00: And then wonder why nothing is changing.
SPEAKER_00: But when you build systems, everything shifts.
SPEAKER_00: You start tracking, you start planning, you start making intentional decisions.
SPEAKER_00: And this isn't just opinion.
SPEAKER_00: The American Psychological Association has shown that financial stress is one of the top sources of stress for adults, meaning a lack of structure with money creates emotional pressure.
SPEAKER_00: And emotional pressure drains your energy.
SPEAKER_00: So now you're not just tired physically, you're tired mentally and financially.
SPEAKER_00: And it all connects back to the same route: lack of discipline.
SPEAKER_00: Because disciplined people don't just manage their time better, they manage their money better.
SPEAKER_00: They don't rely on how they feel, they rely on structure.
SPEAKER_00: And that's where freedom comes.
SPEAKER_00: How you manage your money reflects how you manage your life.
SPEAKER_00: Financial stress is a discipline problem, not just a money problem.
SPEAKER_00: Structure doesn't just build energy, it builds stability.
SPEAKER_00: I need you to hear this.
SPEAKER_00: You're not lazy.
SPEAKER_00: You're not broken.
SPEAKER_00: You're not incapable.
SPEAKER_00: You've just been taught to rely on something that was never meant to sustain you.
SPEAKER_00: Motivation.
SPEAKER_00: And now that you see it, you see how it shows up in your habits, your energy, your routine, even your finances.
SPEAKER_00: And now you get to do something different.
SPEAKER_00: You get to build a system.
SPEAKER_00: You get to build discipline.
SPEAKER_00: You get to build a life that actually works.
SPEAKER_00: So, friends, I know this episode, I went a little deep.
SPEAKER_00: I did that on purpose.
SPEAKER_00: I hope you guys were able to get some takeaways from this topic of conversation, understand why discipline is so important, and figure out ways to implement that in your life.
SPEAKER_00: Start simple, just like the examples I mentioned.
