The Cellular Energy Most People Ignore (Why You Can Be Overfed, Undernourished, and Exhausted)
About this episode
SPEAKER_00: I'm Dana Carvey.
SPEAKER_00: I'm David Spade.
SPEAKER_00: Fly on the Wall is back for another season now on audio and video every Monday and Thursday.
SPEAKER_00: So many incredible guests will be joining us.
SPEAKER_00: Follow and listen to Fly on the Wall everywhere you get your podcast.
SPEAKER_00: To get you.
SPEAKER_00: Mally, physically, and financially.
SPEAKER_00: Because this isn't just about the gym.
SPEAKER_00: It's about life, leadership, and living on your terms.
SPEAKER_00: So gear up, lock in, and let's step into the haven where warriors are made.
SPEAKER_00: And for this episode, I'm actually really excited because this topic for this episode actually came out of a conversation I was having and a statement that was made, which honestly stopped me in my tracks.
SPEAKER_00: And the comment made was Jay, I'm eating, I feel like I'm overeating.
SPEAKER_00: And there's so many days that I feel like all I do is eat.
SPEAKER_00: And honestly, friends, it sparked the light bulb.
SPEAKER_00: So this episode, I want to dedicate for everyone listening to understand cellular energy and how we can be overfed, undernourished, and exhausted.
SPEAKER_00: And I want to dive in with the research that I've done, conversations that I've had with doctors and scientists to really make this episode one that can really be educational.
SPEAKER_00: And I really do hope that by the end of the episode you have so many takeaways.
SPEAKER_00: So let me start by just asking a question.
SPEAKER_00: Have you ever looked at your life and thought, why am I so tired?
SPEAKER_00: I know, I get it.
SPEAKER_00: Simple question.
SPEAKER_00: Have you had that thought?
SPEAKER_00: And not just physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually.
SPEAKER_00: You wake up tired, you need caffeine to get moving.
SPEAKER_00: You hit a wall in the afternoon.
SPEAKER_00: By evening, you are completely drained.
SPEAKER_00: And maybe you've started telling yourself a story.
SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're getting older.
SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're burnt out.
SPEAKER_00: Maybe this is just life now.
SPEAKER_00: But what if that's not true?
SPEAKER_00: What if your body isn't lacking energy?
SPEAKER_00: What if your body is lacking the ingredients required to make energy?
SPEAKER_00: Well, today we're talking about one of the biggest health problems I think nobody is discussing.
SPEAKER_00: See, millions of people are eating enough food, but they're not getting enough nutrition.
SPEAKER_00: And that difference changes everything.
SPEAKER_00: By the end of this episode, you're gonna understand why you can feel exhausted while eating more food than ever before.
SPEAKER_00: You're gonna learn how your cells actually create energy, and you're going to discover seven hidden energy thieves most people never see coming.
SPEAKER_00: So join me.
SPEAKER_00: Let's dive into this one.
SPEAKER_00: All right, here's the strange reality.
SPEAKER_00: According to data from the CDC, obesity rates continue to rise.
SPEAKER_00: Food is everywhere, calories are everywhere.
SPEAKER_00: Yet, fatigue is one of the most common health complaints in the entire world.
SPEAKER_00: So I ask, how can both be true?
SPEAKER_00: How can people have unlimited access to food and still feel exhausted?
SPEAKER_00: Well, because calories and nutrition are not the same thing.
SPEAKER_00: Think of your body like a construction crew.
SPEAKER_00: Calories are workers, nutrients are tools.
SPEAKER_00: You can have five hundred workers standing around, but if nobody has a hammer, a saw, or nails, nothing gets built.
SPEAKER_00: That's what's happening inside many people's bodies.
SPEAKER_00: They're getting plenty of calories, but not enough of the nutrients required for energy production.
SPEAKER_00: So every second of every day, your cells are operating like tiny factories.
SPEAKER_00: Inside those factories are thousands of chemical reactions.
SPEAKER_00: Scientists estimate there are billions of these reactions occurring every second, and every one of them depends on vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.
SPEAKER_00: Not just food, nutrients.
SPEAKER_00: Dr.
SPEAKER_00: Bruce Ames spent decades researching this topic.
SPEAKER_00: His work suggested that when nutrients became scarce, the body begins rationalizing resources.
SPEAKER_00: Think about that.
SPEAKER_00: Your body starts making survival decisions.
SPEAKER_00: It prioritizes staying alive over helping you feel amazing.
SPEAKER_00: That means less energy for performance, less energy for recovery, less energy for optimal health.
SPEAKER_00: So let me dive into some of these thieves.
SPEAKER_00: The first one, the magnesium gap.
SPEAKER_00: Researchers estimate a significant percentage of Americans consume less magnesium than recommended.
SPEAKER_00: Why should you care?
SPEAKER_00: Because magnesium participates in hundreds of biochemical reactions, many directly involved with energy production.
SPEAKER_00: Imagine trying to run a factory while removing half of the workers.
SPEAKER_00: Everything slows down.
SPEAKER_00: Low magnesium has been associated with fatigue, poor sleep quality, muscle tension, reduced recovery.
SPEAKER_00: And some sources that have magnesium include pumpkin seeds, almonds, spinach, black beans, and guess what?
SPEAKER_00: Most people aren't eating enough of them.
SPEAKER_00: The next one: eating food without color.
SPEAKER_00: Let's look at most grocery carts.
SPEAKER_00: They are beige, brown, white, processed, packaged.
SPEAKER_00: Scientists often refer to colorful fruits and vegetables as nutrient-densed foods because they contain compounds called phytonutrients.
SPEAKER_00: These compounds help protect cells from damage.
SPEAKER_00: We like phytonutrients.
SPEAKER_00: The more color vierity you eat, the more diverse these compounds become.
SPEAKER_00: A simple goal.
SPEAKER_00: Can you eat five different colors each day?
SPEAKER_00: Not five vegetables, five colors.
SPEAKER_00: Your cells love diversity.
SPEAKER_00: The next one: living indoors.
SPEAKER_00: Here's something fascinating.
SPEAKER_00: Human beings evolved outdoors.
SPEAKER_00: Yet most people spend over ninety percent of their time inside.
SPEAKER_00: Researchers have linked time in nature to lower stress levels, improved mood, and better overall health outcomes.
SPEAKER_00: Japanese researchers even created a term called forest bathing.
SPEAKER_00: Not hiking, not exercising, simply spending time among trees.
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes the energy boost you're looking for isn't another supplement.
SPEAKER_00: It's sunlight, fresh air, and nature.
SPEAKER_00: The next thief, dehydration you don't notice.
SPEAKER_00: Dr.
SPEAKER_00: Lawrence Armstrong's research found even mild dehydration can negatively impact mood, concentration, and energy.
SPEAKER_00: Not severe dehydration, mild dehydration.
SPEAKER_00: The kind most people walk around with daily.
SPEAKER_00: Many people mistake thirst for fatigue.
SPEAKER_00: Before reaching for caffeine, ask, have I had enough water today?
SPEAKER_00: That answer may surprise you.
SPEAKER_00: The next one, ultra-processed foods.
SPEAKER_00: Researchers have found that a large portion of calories consumed in America come from ultra-processed foods.
SPEAKER_00: These foods are engineered for convenience, not nourishment.
SPEAKER_00: Your body recognizes real food differently.
SPEAKER_00: An apple contains fiber, water, vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds.
SPEAKER_00: Apple-flavored candy contains well, candy.
SPEAKER_00: Your body knows the difference every single time.
SPEAKER_00: Decision fatigue.
SPEAKER_00: Now let's talk about brain energy.
SPEAKER_00: Psychologist Dr.
SPEAKER_00: Roy Boymaster spent years studying self-control.
SPEAKER_00: His research introduced many people to the concept of decision fatigue.
SPEAKER_00: The more decisions you make, the more mentally exhausted you become.
SPEAKER_00: Think about your day.
SPEAKER_00: What to wear, what to eat, which email to answer, which bill to pay, which project to tackle, decision after decision after decision.
SPEAKER_00: Eventually your brain begins conserving energy.
SPEAKER_00: That's why successful people simplify things.
SPEAKER_00: They create routines, systems, schedules, less decision making, more energy.
SPEAKER_00: And you know who's a perfect example of this?
SPEAKER_00: Our United States Army.
SPEAKER_00: The next thief?
SPEAKER_00: Chronic information overload.
SPEAKER_00: This one might be the biggest.
SPEAKER_00: The average person today consumes more information in a single day than previous generations consumed in weeks.
SPEAKER_00: Your brain wasn't designed for endless scrolling, endless notifications, endless alerts.
SPEAKER_00: Every piece of information requires processing.
SPEAKER_00: Every notification steals attention.
SPEAKER_00: Every distraction costs energy.
SPEAKER_00: Researchers call this cognitive load.
SPEAKER_00: The heavier the load, the more exhausted your brain becomes.
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes your battery isn't low because you've done too much.
SPEAKER_00: It's low because you've consumed too much.
SPEAKER_00: Here's what I hope you take away from today.
SPEAKER_00: Energy isn't created by motivation.
SPEAKER_00: Energy isn't created by caffeine.
SPEAKER_00: Energy isn't created by positive thinking.
SPEAKER_00: Energy is created when your body has what it needs to do its job.
SPEAKER_00: Your cells are working for you every second of every day.
SPEAKER_00: The question is, are you giving them the resources they need?
SPEAKER_00: Because when your cells thrive, your mind performs better, your body performs better, your emotions stabilize, your confidence rises, and life begins to feel a lot lighter.
SPEAKER_00: So let me give you a challenge for this week.
SPEAKER_00: Don't change everything.
SPEAKER_00: Choose one thing.
SPEAKER_00: Add one colorful food.
SPEAKER_00: Drink more water.
SPEAKER_00: Spend fifteen minutes outside.
SPEAKER_00: Reduce processed foods.
SPEAKER_00: Create a morning routine.
SPEAKER_00: Turn off notifications.
SPEAKER_00: Choose one.
SPEAKER_00: Then watch what happens.
SPEAKER_00: Because the smallest improvements at the cellular level often create the biggest improvements in everyday life.
SPEAKER_00: And I'll tell you and share with you, friend.
SPEAKER_00: I chose to turn off notifications.
SPEAKER_00: And I can tell you the day has gotten a lot lighter.
SPEAKER_00: So, if today's episode helped you understand your energy differently, share it with someone who's been saying they're exhausted lately.
SPEAKER_00: They may not need another energy drink.
SPEAKER_00: They may need a different understanding of energy itself.
