You’re Not Burned Out - You’re Undisciplined
About this episode
SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Warriors Haven Podcast, the place where discipline meets purpose and everyday people become unstoppable.
SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Jaisha Sutherland, a retired Army drill sergeant, single mom, and the founder of the Warriors Haven.
SPEAKER_00: Around here, we talk fitness, mindset, and the mission of building a stronger you, mentally, physically, and financially.
SPEAKER_00: Because this isn't just about the gym.
SPEAKER_00: It's about life, leadership, and living on your terms.
SPEAKER_00: So gear up, lock in, and let's step into the haven where warriors are made.
SPEAKER_00: I ran a poll a couple days ago, and so many of you reached back out and told me that you guys are not really struggling with energy, you're more so struggling with discipline, which I have to say really hit my happy button because what I'm about to say is probably gonna make some of you a little uncomfortable.
SPEAKER_00: And that is that you're not burnt out, you're not exhausted because life is too hard, you're exhausted because your life lacks discipline.
SPEAKER_00: And I know that's not what people want to hear, but it's what will change your life.
SPEAKER_00: So I thought about it after getting the results from the poll, and I decided I think I'm gonna make this series and call it built by discipline.
SPEAKER_00: I think it sounds fitting, and I want to share with you what I really truly believe, and that is motivation fades, life gets hard, but discipline, discipline builds warriors.
SPEAKER_00: Let me share a quick little story with y'all.
SPEAKER_00: I remember when I retired from the army, for years my life had structure.
SPEAKER_00: Wake up time, training, expectations, accountability.
SPEAKER_00: Everything was set.
SPEAKER_00: And I thought mentally I had prepared for the day where I received my DD 214 and retired.
SPEAKER_00: And then suddenly it was all gone.
SPEAKER_00: No structure, no system, no one telling me what to do.
SPEAKER_00: And at first I thought that was the life.
SPEAKER_00: And then what I didn't realize was how much that structure was actually holding me together.
SPEAKER_00: I didn't realize that until it wasn't there anymore.
SPEAKER_00: I'm a single mom.
SPEAKER_00: I'm a provider, trying to figure out life outside of everything that I knew.
SPEAKER_00: And I remember waking up some days feeling heavy, not just tired, but low.
SPEAKER_00: No direction, no clarity, no routine, and it actually started turning into something deeper: depression.
SPEAKER_00: Because when you go from a life of structure to a life of chaos, your mind doesn't just adjust overnight.
SPEAKER_00: It struggles, and I had to face a hard truth.
SPEAKER_00: It wasn't just my circumstances, it was my lack of structure that I was making everything feel heavier.
SPEAKER_00: And what I went through was something that millions of people are experiencing right now.
SPEAKER_00: Friends, according to the American Psychological Association, a large percentage of adults report feeling overwhelmed by stress and unsure how to manage it daily.
SPEAKER_00: And here's the simple truth behind that.
SPEAKER_00: When people lose structure, their stress increases, their clarity drops, and their energy disappears because your brain needs stability, it needs routine, it needs direction.
SPEAKER_00: Without it, everything feels harder than it actually is.
SPEAKER_00: So let me talk to you guys about how chaos drains your brain.
SPEAKER_00: And let me try to break this down as simply as I can.
SPEAKER_00: Your brain is like a battery, and every decision drains it.
SPEAKER_00: What should I eat?
SPEAKER_00: What should I work out?
SPEAKER_00: What should I focus on?
SPEAKER_00: Where do I even start?
SPEAKER_00: Now imagine doing that all day with no structure.
SPEAKER_00: That's exhausting.
SPEAKER_00: And the American Psychological Association talks about this really in a simple way.
SPEAKER_00: When people are constantly making decisions without routine, it increases stress and mental fatigue.
SPEAKER_00: That means you're not just tired, your brain is overloaded.
SPEAKER_00: That's why you feel drained before your day even starts.
SPEAKER_00: Confusion drains more energy than hard work.
SPEAKER_00: A chaotic life creates a tired mind.
SPEAKER_00: You're not overworked, you're overwhelmed.
SPEAKER_00: Now, here's the shift that changed everything for me when I realized that discipline actually calms my mind.
SPEAKER_00: And if you instill what I'm trying to teach here in this episode and in this series, you'll see that it will calm yours too.
SPEAKER_00: So here's the shift that changed everything for me.
SPEAKER_00: When I started rebuilding structure in my life, everything got lighter, not easier, clearer.
SPEAKER_00: Because discipline removes the constant thinking.
SPEAKER_00: You already decided what time you wake up, what you're doing first, how you're taking care of yourself.
SPEAKER_00: And according to the American Psychological Association, having routines and consistent habits actually help reduce stress and improve mental well-being.
SPEAKER_00: Simple version, structure calms your brain, and a calm brain has more energy.
SPEAKER_00: I had to rebuild that military structure on my own.
SPEAKER_00: No one was giving it to me anymore.
SPEAKER_00: I had to decide this is when I wake up.
SPEAKER_00: This is when I move my body.
SPEAKER_00: This is how I show up.
SPEAKER_00: And slowly my energy started coming back.
SPEAKER_00: Structure doesn't trap you, it frees you.
SPEAKER_00: Discipline reduces stress.
SPEAKER_00: Clarity creates energy.
SPEAKER_00: So motivation, and let's talk about it here for a second, friends, is keeping you stuck.
SPEAKER_00: And I feel like I want to talk about this as one of the biggest lies.
SPEAKER_00: The one, I just need to feel motivated.
SPEAKER_00: No, no, you don't.
SPEAKER_00: Because motivation is emotional.
SPEAKER_00: And again, the American Psychological Association explains that stress and emotions directly affect how people take action.
SPEAKER_00: Meaning, when your emotions are off, your actions are inconsistent.
SPEAKER_00: That's why you keep starting over.
SPEAKER_00: Because you're waiting to feel ready.
SPEAKER_00: Discipline doesn't wait, it executes.
SPEAKER_00: Motivation is a feeling.
SPEAKER_00: Discipline is a decision.
SPEAKER_00: If you wait to feel ready, you'll stay stuck.
SPEAKER_00: Your feelings are not a reliable plan.
SPEAKER_00: So if you've been feeling tired, low, stuck, I want you to hear me clearly.
SPEAKER_00: You're not broken, you're not weak, you're not incapable.
SPEAKER_00: You just don't have a system that's supporting your life right now.
SPEAKER_00: And once you fix that, everything starts to change.
SPEAKER_00: So in the next episode, I'm going to break down the energy system nobody ever taught us.
SPEAKER_00: So you can actually understand what's building your energy and what's destroying it every single day.
SPEAKER_00: And once you see it, you won't be able to go back.
SPEAKER_00: So, friends, I really think honing in on this series where we are built by discipline hopefully will unlock a whole new season in so many of y'all's lives.
SPEAKER_00: So stick with me.
SPEAKER_00: I cannot wait to connect with you guys on the next episode where again we talk about the energy system that nobody ever taught us.
SPEAKER_00: So until next time, stay strong, stay focused, stay ready.
