SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Jaisha Sutherland, a retired Army drill sergeant, single mom, and the founder of the Warriors Haven.
SPEAKER_00: Around here, we talk fitness, mindset, and the mission of building a stronger you, mentally, physically, and financially.
SPEAKER_00: Because this isn't just about the gym.
SPEAKER_00: It's about life, leadership, and living on your terms.
SPEAKER_00: So gear up, lock in, and let's step into the haven where warriors are made.
SPEAKER_00: Welcome to this episode on the Warriors Haven.
SPEAKER_00: I'm so happy and grateful to have you a part of this series that we're calling Built by Discipline.
SPEAKER_00: So in this episode, I'm not gonna start by motivating you.
SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, I can wake you up because what I'm about to say, most people will ignore, even though it explains exactly why they feel stuck.
SPEAKER_00: So here it is.
SPEAKER_00: You don't rise to your goals, you fall to your biology.
SPEAKER_00: And right now, your biology might be working against you.
SPEAKER_00: Not because you're broken, but because of the micro decisions you repeat every single day.
SPEAKER_00: Those ones that are quietly rewiring your brain, draining your energy, and lowering your standard of living.
SPEAKER_00: And the scariest part, you don't feel it happening.
SPEAKER_00: There's no alarm, no rock bottom moment, no dramatic collapse, just a slow decline in focus, in discipline, in confidence, in energy.
SPEAKER_00: Until one day you look up and think, how did I get here?
SPEAKER_00: Today, we're pulling the curtain back.
SPEAKER_00: This isn't surface level drink more water advice.
SPEAKER_00: This is neuroscience.
SPEAKER_00: This is physiology.
SPEAKER_00: This is behavior science.
SPEAKER_00: And by the end of this episode, you're going to see your daily habits in a completely different way.
SPEAKER_00: So let's start with something that should honestly shock you.
SPEAKER_00: A landmark study out of Duke University found that about 43% of your daily behavior is habitual.
SPEAKER_00: That means nearly half your life is not conscious.
SPEAKER_00: It's automatic.
SPEAKER_00: Now pair that with research from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or as we know it, MIT, on the basal ganglia.
SPEAKER_00: That's the part of your brain that's responsible for habits.
SPEAKER_00: Once a behavior becomes a habit, your brain literally reduces activity in decision-making regions.
SPEAKER_00: Translation, you stop thinking and you start executing.
SPEAKER_00: So if your habits are weak, your life runs weak automatically.
SPEAKER_00: And here's the kicker: your brain does not care if a habit is good or bad, it only cares if it's repeated.
SPEAKER_00: So let's break down some of these silent habits that are quietly wrecking people right now.
SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna list off five.
SPEAKER_00: So have your notebook and write them down.
SPEAKER_00: The first one is chronic sleep disruption.
SPEAKER_00: This isn't just about being tired.
SPEAKER_00: This is about your entire system breaking down.
SPEAKER_00: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CDC, one in three adults do not get enough sleep.
SPEAKER_00: Now, here's what happens when you don't sleep properly.
SPEAKER_00: Research from Standard University shows sleep deprivation reduces insulin sensitivity by up to 30%.
SPEAKER_00: It increases grenolin, which is our hunger hormone, and decreases leptin, which is our fullness hormone, meaning you will crave more food, store more fat, and feel less satisfied, but it gets worse.
SPEAKER_00: A study in Nature Reviews Neuroscience found that poor sleep impairs the prefrontal cortex, which is our decision-making home, increases activity in the amygdala, which is our emotional reactivity.
SPEAKER_00: So you're not just tired, you're more emotional, more impulsive, and less disciplined.
SPEAKER_00: The second one, ultra-processed food consumption.
SPEAKER_00: Let's get real here.
SPEAKER_00: This isn't about willpower.
SPEAKER_00: This is about manipulation.
SPEAKER_00: A 2023 study published in the BMJ found that diets high in ultra-processed foods are linked to increased risk of depression by up to 50%, higher rates of obesity, increased all-cause mortality.
SPEAKER_00: And here's why.
SPEAKER_00: Ultra processed foods are engineered to hit your dopamine system.
SPEAKER_00: Research from Harvard Medical School shows these foods trigger reward pathways similar to addictive substances, disrupt natural hunger signals, lead to over consummation.
SPEAKER_00: So when you say, I don't have control around food, it's not just you, it's chemistry.
SPEAKER_00: The third one, serendarity behavior.
SPEAKER_00: You've heard it before, but most people still ignore it.
SPEAKER_00: Prolonged sitting has been called the new smoking in multiple public health discussions.
SPEAKER_00: According to research published in the journal of the American College of Cardiology, sitting for long periods is linked to higher risk of cardiovascular disease, even in people who exercise.
SPEAKER_00: And the World Health Organization, or WHO, estimates physical inactivity contributes to over five million deaths per year globally.
SPEAKER_00: Let that sink in.
SPEAKER_00: Not smoking, not alcohol, inactivity.
SPEAKER_00: And it's silent.
SPEAKER_00: No pain, no immediate warning, just long-term damage.
SPEAKER_00: The fourth one: cognitive overload, constant input, no processing.
SPEAKER_00: You wake up, it's your phone, emails, social media, podcasts, music, news.
SPEAKER_00: Your brain never gets silence.
SPEAKER_00: Research from University of California and Irvine found it takes twenty three minutes and fifteen seconds to refocus after a distraction.
SPEAKER_00: Now, think about how many times you get distracted in a day.
SPEAKER_00: You're not just busy, you're cognitively fragmented.
SPEAKER_00: And over time, this leads to mental fatigue, reduced creativity, increased stress hormones.
SPEAKER_00: Lastly, negative internal dialogue.
SPEAKER_00: This one doesn't show up on your calendar, but it runs your life.
SPEAKER_00: Studies in cognitive behavioral therapy show that repeated negative thoughts strengthen neuropathways associated with self-doubt, increase risk of anxiety and depression.
SPEAKER_00: Neuroplasticity works both ways.
SPEAKER_00: The more you think something, the more your brain believes it's true.
SPEAKER_00: So let's zoom out.
SPEAKER_00: These habits are not random, they all hit the same system.
SPEAKER_00: Your energy.
SPEAKER_00: So when your energy is compromised, your life follows.
SPEAKER_00: You don't need more motivation.
SPEAKER_00: You need a system that supports your biology.
SPEAKER_00: So let me introduce a three-step interruption protocol here.
SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, this will help shift for you.
SPEAKER_00: The first one: run a biological audit, not a goal audit, a body audit.
SPEAKER_00: Ask yourself, how many hours am I actually sleeping?
SPEAKER_00: How much water am I drinking?
SPEAKER_00: How often am I moving?
SPEAKER_00: Track it for 72 hours because data creates awareness and awareness creates change.
SPEAKER_00: Step two.
SPEAKER_00: Get that in protein.
SPEAKER_00: This is backed by performance research from experts like Andrew Herberman, who emphasizes that your body and your brain run on predictable biological inputs.
SPEAKER_00: Control inputs, control outputs, and the third, lower the bar, but raise the standard.
SPEAKER_00: This is where most people mess up.
SPEAKER_00: They try to go from zero to one hundred.
SPEAKER_00: Instead, get a 10-minute walk.
SPEAKER_00: Do one high protein meal.
SPEAKER_00: Get to bed one hour earlier than you have been.
SPEAKER_00: Small actions, repeated daily, rewire the brain faster than extreme bursts of motivation.
SPEAKER_00: Friends, you don't need to change everything.
SPEAKER_00: You need to stop ignoring what's quietly destroying you.
SPEAKER_00: Because the truth is, your life isn't falling apart all at once.
SPEAKER_00: It's being shaped by what you repeat daily.
SPEAKER_00: So here's your move.
SPEAKER_00: Pick one silent habit and interrupt it today.
SPEAKER_00: Because once you take control of the small things, you take control of everything.
SPEAKER_00: If this episode hit you, share it with someone who needs a wake-up call.
